What are people ashamed of? And why are they ashamed at all? In the play ‘Wstyd’ (Shame) by Polish theater director Gosia Wdowik, three generations of women from one family are confronted with questions about social shame and how this is passed on from one generation to the next. The captivating production tells an intimate story about mothers and daughters who love and talk to each other, even if they don’t always fully understand each other. Based on personal experiences, Gosia Wdowik explores how shame promotes and maintains social inequality. Shame manifests itself the moment people become visible, against their will and unprepared. Who has the privilege to speak out about weakness and shame? And who or what do these women sacrifice to free themselves from socially conditioned shame?
