‘Die Werkstatt’ (The Workshop) is a variable, walk-through and performative installation constructed out of found and recycled materials by the Tunisian artists’ collective El Warcha (Arabic for “the workshop”). Part of the Incubation Pod, this space is particularly aimed at young people and functions as an imaginative playground, meeting point and place to relax. A flexible recreation area that invites all visitors to spend time and redesign the museum space in a playful and if necessary – using drills and other materials at hand – to collectively create an environment that will evolve and grow as visitors come by. In the evenings, the playground is transformed into a dreamscape where people can linger and which will also accommodate talks with festival artists.

‘Die Werkstatt’ (The Workshop) is part of the curated art program “Incubation Pod. Dreaming worlds” at the Museum Angewandte Kunst, which gathers different artistic ideas, spaces and worlds in the form of interactive installations, virtual realities and performances. The whole program and tickets are available here.

About the Artist(s)

The Tunisian collective El Warcha advocates the joy of experimentation as a catalyst for reflection and exchanging knowledge. Their participatory educational ideas reconceive living spaces. In this process, the projects they have initiated include swimming concerts, short science fiction films, and a public boxing ring. El Warcha promotes civic engagement, co-determination, and education outside traditional institutions. El Warcha has been active internationally since 2018: as well as in Tunis, there have now been workshops in London, Lisbon, Davis, and in the Tunisian desert city of Nefta. In 2022 El Warcha was invited to documenta fifteen.
