Bodies vibrate and produce sound. Even when they seem to be silent. Far removed from the empty echo chambers where people are fed by algorithms with only what they already want to know and hear, Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot (BVDS) explore ‘Echo’s Chamber’ as an open, poetic, mythological meeting space and portal. Here a creature grows from an underground fungal tissue that is neither man nor woman, neither animal nor vegetable: Pan, Actaeon, Dionysus, Osiris, or the Green Man – a creature that has always been here, yet is constantly in the process of evolving. With an immersive installation and performance specially devised for the Incubation Pod, BVDS, accompanied by virtual guards, stage an eavesdropping world that transcends superficial perceptions.

On July 8 at 7:00 PM, BvdS, Meiro Koizumi and Saeborg will meet in a Scenographic Salon Talk at Museum Angewandte Kunst.

“Echo’s Chamber” is part of the curated art program “Incubation Pod. Dreaming worlds” at the Museum Angewandte Kunst, which gathers different artistic ideas, spaces and worlds in the form of interactive installations, virtual realities and performances. The whole program and tickets are available here.

About the Artist(s)

Suzan Boogaerdt and Bianca van der Schoot have worked together as the artist duo BVDS since graduating from the Mime School at Amsterdam University of the Arts. Their video installations and performances are deeply rooted in the anarchist tradition of Dutch mime. They use cyborgs, masks, puppets, avatars, and semi-mechanized figures to raise the question of how the (human) body is being controlled and its consciousness and way of life are being influenced. BVDS exhibited their theatrical installations at the Biennale Teatro di Venezia, 2017. In 2022 they had a solo exhibition at ‘TENT’, platform for contemporary art in Rotterdam. Their latest theater piece ‘UNDERWORLDS’ premiered in January 2023 at Schauspielhaus Bochum. BVDS collaborated with Susanne Kennedy on several productions at Volksbühne Berlin.
