A classroom for girls: desks, chairs, a blackboard. The teachers cannot be seen or heard. But their presence and authority are evident from the behavior of their students. Mahoor is 16 years old and has moved to Tehran in the middle of the school year. At her new school, she becomes close friends with the best student in the class. However, the relationship developing between the two of them soon leads to conflict. In ‘ست’ (Is), Parnia Shams works with young performers who recently attended school themselves. The girls sit in lessons, laugh, whisper, secretly exchange notes, and invent stories. Subtle gestures reveal their empathy and protest. Parnia Shams demonstrates the silencing effect of a power that influences our most intimate decisions – and we experience school as a contested space of discipline and solidarity.
